Automated car washes are your paints worst nightmare. Spinning brushes trap contaminants from the cars before you and drag them across your paint leaving scratches and swirl marks across every panel. Touchless washes are better but rely on harsh chemicals that shock the paint surface to release contamination. These washes are not safe for ceramic coatings or sealants and damage protective coatings that help protect your paint and plastics from UV damage.
-
Think of a ceramic coating as a high-tech, semi-permanent sacrificial layer for your vehicle's paintwork. It is a liquid polymer, frequently utilizing silica dioxide ($SiO_2$), that employs nanotechnology to chemically bond with the clear coat on a molecular level. Once it cures, it transforms into a hard, glass-like barrier that fills in the microscopic imperfections of the paint. This results in an incredibly hydrophobic, slick surface that provides deep gloss and superior, long-lasting protection against UV rays, chemical stains, and environmental contaminants, that lasts years as opposed to months.
-
Realistically, a customer should expect a 1-step correction to focus on boosting gloss and clarity by removing lighter defects like oxidation and fine haze, typically achieving about a 60–70% reduction in overall swirling—it makes the car look significantly better, though deeper scratches will definitely still be visible. A 2-step is a deeper dive meant for chasing that true, mirror-like finish, using an aggressive compounding stage to level out heavier defects followed by a fine polish for maximum clarity; with this, you should expect about 80-90% removal or light to moderate imperfections for a deep and glossy paint surface. Deep scratches will still be present and visible.
